Triptych MAsk Sculpture

Plaster, Acrylic, Plywood, Triple Gloss Finish

This sculptural triptych explores repetition and variation through three hand-cast plaster mask forms housed within a custom plywood frame. While each mask shares the same structural foundation, shifts in color and surface detailing create distinct emotional identities. The layered acrylic paint and high-gloss finish amplify depth and intensity, reinforcing the balance between expressive form and controlled construction.

Creating The Sculpture

Creating this sculpture was an exciting and rewarding experience, especially as my first attempt at working in this medium. I’m very pleased with how it turned out! I chose to explore Oni masks because I’ve always been drawn to their expressive, exaggerated features and the balance between intimidation and symbolism they carry within Japanese folklore. Below, you can see parts of my process as the piece developed. With guidance from my professor, Dr. Massey, and a few in-class demonstrations, I was able to successfully bring my vision to life!
